“Becoming an Airway Focused Clinician”:

The Identifier and Evaluator & Stabilizer

Presented by:

Dr. Mark Cruz

Dr. Barry Raphael

Dr. Ellen Crean-Binion

Dr. Richard Roblee

This course will be held virtually, Friday January 13th - Saturday January 14th

7am - 3pm pst

Course Description:

The current orthodoxy in medicine and dentistry in addressing perturbed sleep is driven by symptom alleviation and disease management. This three-day course will provide a science-based clinical framework for addressing airway dysfunction beyond obstructive sleep apnea. When moving beyond oral appliance therapy and pneumatic stinting of the airway, dental and medical procedures/techniques largely focus on correcting recognized structural deficits. These clinical measures tend to be biomechanical in nature ignoring the underling physiologic considerations and therefore only provide part of the solution. Understanding the functional and behavioral risk factors as well lead to more predictable, patient-centered, stable outcomes.

Learning Objectives:

·       A global, comprehensive view of the airway problem beyond perturbed sleep.

·       Understand how to address sleep/breathing dysfunction beyond the “gold standard” management strategies.

·       Understand facial phenotyping beyond the Pickwikian profile

·       Understand how medicine manages disordered sleep but how dentistry can cure the problem.

·        Learn an integrated perspective of TMD related to how we develop craniofacially and how we breathe & swallow.

·        Understanding Craniofacial Dystrophy, why it is happening to us, and the ramifications of undergrown jaws.

·       The sequence of Airway-centered Disorders from birth to death and the medical comorbidities that are created by them

·       Understanding the three realms of etiology: Structure, Function, and Behavior and how assessments and treatment goals are assigned to each.

·       Learning to recognize the phenotypes and habits that characterize Airway-centered Disorders.  Use simple screening instruments in your practice on Monday.

·       How to build a portfolio for case presentations with patients and case reviews with your collaborative team.  Learn about the medical metrics that are included in the portfolio and are used for outcomes measures.

·       Learn the Pediatric and Adult Treatment Algorithms and understand the sequencing of care.

·       Get a survey of all the available modalities, from birth to death, that are available for mitigating and curing Airway-centered Disorders.

·       Explore the various paths of learning to put these systems into your practice
